The EPA recommends that you have your home tested for lead if it was built before 1978. There are 2 kinds of tests that can be done:
- A paint inspection which will tell you the lead content of every painted surface in your home. This test will not tell you if the paint is a hazard or how to deal with it.
- A risk assessment which will tell you if there are any sources of serious lead exposure such as peeling paint and lead dust. This test tells you what actions to take to address these hazards.
The EPA recommends that you hire qualified professionals to do the work. There are standards in place for certifying lead-based paint professionals to ensure the work is done safely, reliably, and effectively.
